THE BLUE HOUR LOUNGE

Pete exchanges information and gear talk for the advanced and the novice musician.

The Blue Hour Lounge was a forum in which Pete answered questions from fans on guitar playing and the music business. Although some of these questions were from the late 1990s, the answers are still helpful and insightful. There are also links to exclusive interviews.

QUESTION Hi Pete, swapped 6.8 k resistor for 10k and got some middle honk.thanks....what advantage is swapping 6L6 vs. 6V6 tubes in my Deluxe (more gain?) and will I have to rebias even w/ matched pair
thanx Paul.
ANSWER: Yes ...re bias..I found that it gave me a cleaner sound.. especially in pre amp distortion. Set your treble where you normally would then add bass from zero to? till it sounds good... With the mid range boost you are going to get more bass from that area ...it should be voiced more the range of the guitar...pete
QUESTION: Dear Mr. Anderson,
I noticed from the Line 6 web site that you were beginning to show some interests in there products.

I am looking to buy an (only) amp for myself and have been using a Pod Pro (direct recording) in a home studio environment monitored through JBL 4412A Studio monitors.

Do you still like the Line 6 Flextone amp you commented on at Line 6's web site and would you ever consider using it instead of tube amps on a permanent basis (recording and live playing)? Also, any suggestions on mic placement for that amp?
Thanks for your response.

ANSWER: I have not used an amp on a recording in about 3 years.... I have been using amp farm or the pod...for live I am going to try to use the pod pro with a tube power amp I will tell you later this summer how well it works.

QUESTION: Hi Pete,
My friend is not on the internet and has a 12 year old son who is interested in guitar lessons. What would be your advice in looking for a teacher?
Thanks a million and I'll see you at least 2 Dwight concerts.

Patty Brown

ANSWER: You need to interview a few different teachers in your neighberhood.. He needs to learn theory more than how to read single notes or hot licks...pete
QUESTION: Hey Pete,
What are your thoughts on developing perfect or absolute Pitch. Do you have perfect pitch?
Thanks as usual,
Troy
ANSWER: You need to try to develop a good ear...in other words be able to tell what interval is being played or what the nature the chord is.
...example, major, minor, dominant, diminished or augmented..and how they relate to the key you are in...That is much more important than having perfect pitch...and no I do not have perfect pitch.. and most people I know do not. It is not as much of a blessing as one might think, but having what we musicians call a good ear is ..and that can be learned...also learning the major scale harmonized was one of the most important things I have ever learned...thanx /pete
QUESTION: Dear Pete, Hi, how are you? I saw you last summer at the North Dakota State Fair. I was the one with the 'Pete, U Rule' sign. Remember that? That concert was so awesome! The only downfall was that I missed the meet-and-greet (if there was one). I have to say that you are the best guitarist I have ever seen. I thought Brent Mason was awesome until I saw you play. You're 10 times better than him! I love all your work on Dwight's CDs and on your own, especially the baritone and slide guitar.

So here's my question: Are there many recording studios in LA that are geared toward country music? In a couple of years I'm planning to go to recording school in Tempe, AZ to become an engineer. I love country music, but I hate the current pop trend in Nashville. I agree with what you said about music in Nashville being a big business conglomeration and that it will become more and more pop. That's definitely the kind of thing I don't want to be involved with, which is why I want to work elsewhere. Somewhere in California is at the top of my list, since I like the West Coast sound. Would Bakersfield be a better choice? Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

I hope I get the chance to meet you someday, along with the rest of the band. You guys are so awesome--I hope you come back to North Dakota soon! Meanwhile, I wish you the best of luck on all your projects! I CAN'T WAIT FOR DAREDEVIL!!
Sincerely,
Michelle Krieger

ANSWER: If you want to be an engineer be sure to learn pro tools that is a recording studio software program using a computer...the more computer literate you are the better of you will be.. I would not move to Bakersfield or Nashville ...only Los Angeles for the future of the industry ...but with those skills in hand combined with a healthy knowledge of old school analog recording skills you will be able to work any where...good luck /pete
